The Az'Rul

The Az’rul conquered swiftly and fell just as fast.


A History

Not long after the War of the Fey, the grand Arkhosian Empire had finally collapsed. Thousands of dragonborn were scattered across the world and those that made it to Kandalur were followers of the Ancient Blue Dragon, Az’Rul. They named themselves in his honor and tried to found the Az’Rulean Empire in his name.

They came by the thousands through the deserts of Aldesta, enslaving the innocent and unprepared gnomes that lived there. They founded Alzahn, their capital in the northern reaches of Aldesta. They quickly went to war against the newly created Heroic. Their might in battle and military genius held off the armies of Kandalur for years.

Their mistake was their greed. During the war, they traveled across the Vega Cay to the Erelhei Dominions, intent on conquering ALL lands. There was a reason that no kingdoms had conquered the Dominions and there was no way to know what awaited them. Thousands of drow raiding parties decimated the Az’Rulean forces in the Erelhei Dominions as a force of men and dwarves from Alheim freed the gnomes of Aldesta. After these two events, the Heroic quickly destroyed what was left of the Az’Rulean Empire. The dragonborn that remain today are the descendants of this failed empire, known as the Az’Rul.


Az’Rul stand roughly 6-7 feet tall and weigh anywhere from 220-320 pounds. They have scales of all different colors, reflecting some of the heritage of their individual clans or families. All have a deep blue color that manifests in one of two ways. For some, it only shows when light reflects off of their scales. No matter the color of the scale, a blue shine can be seen. For others, each scale is outlined in a deep blue, no matter the color of the scale itself. These come from their true lineage of Az’Rul the Ancient Blue Dragon. Az’Rul with blue scales are considered “pureblood” and have a higher place amongst dragonborn society in Kandalur.


The Az’Rul are very unwelcome in many of the Shattered Kingdoms. Alheim and Aldesta particularly despise the dragonborn for what their ancestors attempted. However, the Kingdom of Aramanthir welcomed them and the Queen even offered lands and jobs to many. Most have settled in the north in Aramanthir and Erethel.


Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1. Dexterity score decreases by 1.

Age. Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.

Alignment. Dragonborn tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil (represented by Bahamut and Tiamat, respectively). Most dragonborn are good, but those who side with Tiamat can be terrible villains.

Size. Dragonborn are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Draconic Ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from teh Draconic Ancestry table (PHB pg 34). Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determine by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Breath Weapon. You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation.

When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. Add proficiency die to the damage.

After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry along with lightning damage. Purebloods are immune to lightning damage.

Frightening Heritage. You have proficiency in the Intimidation skill.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.

Stormborn. Az’Rul are only born during high electrical storms. This blessing allows for heightened senses during these violent storms. When outside during one of these storms, the Az’Rul can not have disadvantage.
